Strata: Portraits of Humanity “July 2017"  (Nevada Native American pipemaker; drama in pre-Roman Gaul)  (1) Hilman Tobey, a Northern Paiute living at Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, who celebrated his 100th birthday, made stone-bowled pipes for use in traditional ceremonies.  He teaches pipe-making skills to apprentice Norman Zuniga.  (2) It is 70 BC, before the Roman subjugation of Gaul by Julius Caesar.  Cotos, a aristocrat and warrior, runs  a farm with his wife, Artimias, in the land of the Eduens, in what is now Burgundy.  Cotos is going to Bibracte, for an important vote and to fetch a sword for his son Eusugenios, establishing him as a genuine warrior. Running the Gauntlet: The Challenges of Harassment Experienced by Our Minority Students Panelists at this City Club of Eugene forum were School District 4-J Superintendent Gustavo Balderas and Springfield School Superintendent Susan Rieke-Smith will speak about the data collection and responsive programs being mounted collaboratively by all three local districts & Dena James, a teacher and parent whose biracial children attend local schools will speak about her experience and what needs to be done. Oregon has an inordinately high number of incidents of harassment of schoolchildren arising from racial, ethnic, religious, or gender-identity intolerance, according to national statistics. Statistically Lane County leads the state in such offenses. Interview With Brian Willson   Brian Willson was appalled by what he witnessed serving in Vietnam and recognized in horror that “I’m on the wrong side.” Later, during the Reagan administration’s proxy wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador, Brian joined others blocking the munitions trains to the Contras from the Concord Naval Weapons Station near Oakland.  A train didn’t stop, ran over him and severed his legs below the knees.  His biography, Blood on the Tracks, has been made into a feature-length documentary film, Paying the Price for Peace. Interview With Robert Kirkconnell   While stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War, Bob Kirkconnell was an Air Force NCO tracking use of military aircraft when he inadvertently discovered that heroin was being smuggled out in dead GI bodies.  He came to realize extensive involvement of US personnel and equipment that identified this as a government operation, which set him on an unsettling path of investigation leading up to the Kennedy assassinations and beyond, described in his book, American Heart of Darkness. King of Roads King of Roads is a signature documentary film about the building of America’s first scenic highway. This magnificent achievement, known as The Historic Columbia River Highway, was patterned after the Axenstrasse highway in Switzerland. The film also contains original historic footage of Sam Hill (the highway’s builder) and the Queen of Romania when she arrived in 1926 to dedicate the Maryhill Museum and enjoy the experience of the Columbia River Gorge. This documentary also gives you the experience of driving down this masterpiece of highway engineering in a historic vehicle convoy led by Edward DeVito in his 1918 Hupmobile. Narration by Dan Nims.
