Strata: Portraits of Humanity December 2014 (East and southeast Anatolia; English China Shipwreck site in Biscayne Bay) (1) Eastern and southeastern Anatolia in Turkey has great scenic beauty and is an archaeological wonderland with clear traces of many civilizations.  It includes Mt. Nimrud, with a massive burial mound and monumental statues placed at the summit 2000 years ago.  (2) During 2011 excavations on the English China Shipwreck in Biscayne National Park, Florida, the crew hoped to pinpoint the ship’s date and identity.  It appeared to have been carrying a load of English ceramics to an unknown colonial destination, sometime between 1765 and 1775. Look Ma, No Hands: The Age of Self-Driving Cars Speakers: Bill Smart is an Associate Professor in the Robotics Program at Oregon State University.  He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from University of Dundee and a Masters Degree in Robotics from University of Edinburgh.  He also earned a Masters and PhD degrees in Computer Science form Brown University; Ralph Parshall is the General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Eugene.  He has worked in the automobile industry for over 50 years.  As a native Oregonian he first worked in Portland, and moved to Eugene in 1970 working for the Porsche Audi dealership, and currently 18 years at the Mercedes-Benz Dealership; and Andrew E. Dick is the Connected, Automated and Electric Vehicle (CAEV) Advisor for ODOT.  Previously he spent seven years working on electric vehicle policy and program implementation for the ten states that have adopted the California Zero Emission Vehicle Program.  He holds a Bachelor’s in International Political Economy from Colorado College. Strata: Portraits of Humanity April 2015 (Historical archaeology in downtown Boise; South Carolina pottery kiln excavation) (1) The unexpected discovery of a well associated with one of the earliest homes in Boise, Idaho, led to an archaeological excavation.  The home was built by a leading citizen, Cyrus Jacobs, and later became a Basque boarding house.  Today, it is a museum run by the Basque Museum and Cultural Center.  (2) The University of Illinois excavates an industrial pottery kiln that began operation in the early 1800s producing the “tupperware” of the time, a commodity without which plantation life in the Edgefield District of South Carolina could not have thrived. The Haunts of 355 W. 8th Ave. -The Eugene News Network, in collaboration with 1 1/2 Blocks from Broadway Productions, brings us a play titled “The Haunts of 355 W. 8th Ave.” In this Halloween play, new tenants to an apartment building soon find out the reasons why no one else lives in the building. A unique aspect of this show is that the theater was the apartment building at that address. It was performed in front of a live audience. The show was written, directed, and produced by Mike Schwab.
